Happy Music Monday. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. I've decided to share Mahalia Jackson singing one of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s favorite songs, Precious Lord, Take My Hand written by Rev. Thomas A Dorsey. Another one of his favorites gospel songs was the hymn If I Can Help Somebody written by Alma Androzzo. He fell in love with that song in Denver when he heard a woman named Anna Lee Williams sing it. He later convinced her to record it, but unfortunately I have not been able to find the recording. Here is Tennessee Ernie Ford singing the classic hymn.
Additionally, I've composed a top-five list of gospel songs in honor of the late Dr. King. Isaac Haney and the Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir singing At a Time Like This and Abner Jay's version of Swing Low are particularly close to my heart. Happy Music Monday.
